Getting a Tutor for Your Child Part 1: Finding a Tutor
Make the most out of your child’s tutoring experience!
HOW DO YOU FIND A TUTOR?
1. Word of mouth
Social Media community groups have helped tremendously when asking a large group of local people for tutor recommendations. It is simple to see if a particular name comes up repeatedly. It is also simple to message a person back, asking them for details on why they recommend that tutor so much.
Sometimes the child’s teacher or local libraries will have names and contact information of tutors as well. You can search directories for tutoring businesses, but be sure to continue researching the following tips.
2. Consider the tutor’s credentials.
Is the tutor certified in a particular subject or grade level? Most states have a database online where you can look up the teacher’s name. You can also ask to see certifications.
Does the tutor have references of previous clients who have worked successfully with the tutor? Sometimes a tutor is recommended by a friend and not a client who has actually used that tutor’s service.
How does the tutor keep record of progress the student has made? Everyone likes to see progress—even the child who will be developing confidence in learning the skills.
Does the tutor have a resume with a record of past work?
3. Observe the initial sessions.
You can learn from the strategies the tutor uses. Take notes or ask the tutor for a summary report each day. I usually keep a binder with loose leaf paper where I write observations and recommendations for practice at home. Everything is dated and kept in order. The binder is a reminder for you of the skills that need extra focus. It can also be taken to a parent teacher conference for making learning goals for school.
